Walkover lights or step lights are popularforms of lighting both inside the house but especially outdoors in gardens,driveways, steps, decks, fountains, etc. These lights have requirements for durability, weight carrying and water resistance, and can come in compact forms or with regular spots included in walkover fittings. In both cases LED lights  are becoming the most common solution for their many advantages.

The most important feature for getting longlasting, durable walkover lights is to get a fitting with high durability and high IP rating. Waterproof walkover lights usually come with IP65 – IP68 ratings, the highest ones are suitable for using in a pool or fountain. Always check the weight your lights can carry, as not all fittings are suitable for use in driveways for instance, some are only good for carrying a person’s weight. Submersible lights also have a limit how deep they can be used in water. Simple step lights are probably the least expensive, since indoors they do not have to face various weather conditions.

LED lights are the best solution for steplights for several reasons. Most of all, these lights are cool running, so the closed fitting of the walkover light – mostly made of steel – does not get hot, and will be less hazard of fire. Since they have an extremely long lifespan, they need no maintenance for years to come. If they are used as décor lights for only a few hours a day, some can last as long as 30 years. Though fittings are available with regular spotlights, if you decide on LED lights, you will not need to change them for a very long time. Therefore compact LED lights are just as suitable. Further advantage is their durability to shock and vibration. They do not blow out when used in a deck for instance, where lights have to deal with regular vibration when you walk on them.
