Light pollution is a form of pollution that we feel least affected by, which is why we tend to pay little or no attention to avoiding it. Light pollution is a result of ill-designed lighting illuminating not downward where we need the light, but upwards as well. Since the majority of our street lightings are sources of light pollution, urban areas are all covered with a glow of light during nights, affecting not only natural life surrounding it, but also of its inhabitants.
Since light is a guidance for all living creatures on Earth – not only for finding our ways, but guidance for our biological rhythm, we are all affected by these changes, but the first sufferers are animals obviously. Reproduction, feeding and migration all can be altered due to artificial lighting, not to mention how easy targets some species can become to their predators. We also lose the natural sight of our universe, most towns now tend to be starless completely, and we are getting used to exist and sleep in light as well.
Since the most significant source of light pollution are street lights, radical changes will have to include these sources at first. There are basically two ways of reducing light pollution in these sources: one is by using a lamp with narrower beam angle, illuminating only downwards; or by reducing the number of hours these lights are on.
For both changes, LED lights or LED street lights are the best solution. Since LED lights have a beam of light rather rectangular, it is easier to cover areas which really need illumination. Also the beam angle of LEDs is more easily determined, and they only illuminate to the determined directions, unlike high-intensity discharge lamps most commonly used for street lighting. For reducing the number of operating hours, LED lights are also ideal because they can be dimmed to even 1% of their brightness and light up with full brightness instantly. Street lights connected to movement sensors can be dimmed down or switched off when not in use, and lit up fully whenever movement is sensed. But LED street lights have the further advantage of low power consumption as well, operation with attached solar panels, extremely long lifespan and low costs of installation, operation and maintenance.
